It’s been a month and a few days since the new semester started in Youngstown, Ohio and it’s been one crazy ride so far! I’ve learned so many lessons while meeting fellow capitalism lovers on campus. One of the most important lessons being: always bring rocks when you table outside and when in doubt, bring yellow scarves. Another great lesson learned was to always be prepared to fight back against angry anti-fracking professors who are ready to troll you about his “expert knowledge” on School Choice (yawn!). In the Steel Valley it’s rare to find Conservatives, so our first tabling session at Youngstown State University’s Organization Fair didn’t go as well as I had anticipated. Fear not, it only went up from there!
Our message is resonating all over campus at Youngstown State University. Our biggest recruiting tool has been social media. This week, just about every person that came to our table had heard about Turning Point USA from Twitter. In fact, we are in the middle of promoting our first event this semester! I’m excited to have business consultant, Brent Hamachek, speak to YSU later in February!
What’s the best way to start a conversation? Ask everyone that walks by, “Do you want a scarf?”, “Conversation hearts for a conversation about America?” (my personal favorite), or “Do you like Ron Swanson?”. I’m looking forward to a semester of invading safe spaces, and educating iPhone users that the government didn’t make their phone. I can’t wait to visit Hiram College and local high schools to teach them why freedom is better than socialism. It’s a long, cold winter in Youngstown, Ohio, but the message of BIG GOVERNMENT SUCKS is heating up!
