Anyone else tired of hearing about cancel culture?
It seems like every day we wake up and someone new is “canceled.”
To be completely honest, does anyone even understand what being canceled really means?
We live in a society where we are told to fight for what we believe in, but it seems like if someone else doesn’t agree with it, you are automatically targeted with being canceled.
Fighting for what you believe in – It’s one phrase with two different meanings depending on who says it:
- Conservatives fighting for what they believe in = Oppressive, racist, misogynistic, homophobic, etc.
- Leftists fighting for what they believe in = Productive, important progress for equality, etc.
Who is even in charge of who gets canceled?
It is such a confusing thing. Some would say “The Mob”, the loud voices that flood social media with backlash through comments, videos, and content that says how offended they are forces the hand of the people in power in a particular situation.
For example, Lucasfilm executives fired Gina Carano after social media backlash, and a student’s admittance to the University of Tennessee was revoked because she sang the lyrics of a song. That’s just a few of many situations where both famous and everyday Americans have had their reputations and livelihoods destroyed.
This new online trend of being canceled is targeted to ruin people’s lives based on what someone believes in. No one is allowed to think for themselves anymore without the repercussions of being canceled.
Cancel culture is really just a cover-up and “nice” way to bullying someone into silence, and it has got to stop.
This is a wake-up call and a reminder that IT IS OK TO AGREE TO DISAGREE. Everyone doesn’t have to think the same way and believe the same things. That’s what makes us unique!
