Turning Point Faith Contributor Pastor John Amanchukwu was effectively silenced by the Baltimore City Board of Education. The pastor was prepared to speak during the August 27, 2024, school board meeting when a “citywide emergency” was declared. Pastor Amanchukwu was surrounded by police officers as community members were evacuated from the board room.
The Baltimore Banner said an announcement was made after the board members returned from a short break. At least eight officers arrived to clear the building but didn’t provide any information to the public. Quoting a district statement, the Banner wrote:
“‘During tonight’s meeting, the board of school commissioners was made aware of a security issue in the boardroom. The building was evacuated to allow law enforcement space to effectively address the situation.’”
The source also said Pastor Amanchukwu “accused the school system of coming up with a lie to prevent the public from hearing his message.” He declared the ordeal to be a violation of his First Amendment rights and posed the question, “How much damage can I do in 180 seconds?”
In a statement to TPUSA Frontlines, Pastor Amanchukwu declared:
“Baltimore has a Black Governor, a Black Mayor, a predominantly Black school board, and a significant amount of black cops, but when a Black Christian Conservative Pastor comes to town, the board in synergy with the police department, fabricates an emergency just to rob me of my freedom of speech. Once again the left proves to be the real threat to democracy.”

Pastor Amanchukwu often speaks out against hypersexualized reading materials in public school libraries. If his First Amendment rights had not been infringed upon, he likely would have exposed the LGBT-themed texts currently available to BCPS students. A list of inappropriate books includes titles such as:
- “The Best At It” by Maulik Pancholy (available at George Washington Elementary School #22)
- “Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag” by Rob Sanders (available at Bay Brook Elementary/Middle School)
- “The Full Spectrum: A New Generation of Writing about Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Other Identities” by David Levithan & Billy Merrell (available at Forest Park High School)
Pastor Amanchukwu also noted that Baltimore City Public Schools went from 8.8% math proficiency in 2023 to 10.2% in 2024. He further stated:
“Consider this. Just in the past eight years, taxpayers have given [BCPS] more than $12 BILLION to educate students, and nearly 90% of those students are not proficient in math. The graduation rate is only 70%.
“Baltimore City Schools are not preparing kids for jobs in S.T.E.A.M., they are grooming them to be underemployed and slaves to the welfare system.”
