Growing up in high school, did you ever imagine you’d be told by your teachers you were inherently privileged or disadvantaged simply for holding physical characteristics?
Students at the Desert Sands Unified School District in La Quinta, California, are facing this reality as we speak, landing the school board on Turning Point USA’s School Board Watchlist.
Recently, a district teacher was caught providing lecture materials to high school students, telling them they are inherently privileged if they are Christian, straight, or male.
Included in the classroom materials is a list of boxes that students are required to check off to “identify their privilege.” The categories include white, male, class, Christian, cisgender, able-bodied, and heterosexual.
While the district has since claimed these materials are not a part of the approved curriculum, it’s unclear if the teacher is facing punitive consequences.
