Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw drew attention over the weekend for wearing a hat with a Bible verse on it during the team’s Pride Night event.
In celebration of the organization’s Pride Night on Friday, players wore a special version of the traditional LA baseball cap where the team’s iconic “LA” letters were rendered in rainbow colors rather than solid white. During the broadcast of the game, Kershaw was seen in the dugout wearing the cap, though his hat featured the inscription “Gen 9:12-16” written on the front.
The verse is referencing a passage in the Book of Genesis in which God establishes a covenant with Noah, using the rainbow as a symbol of His promise never to destroy the Earth again by flood.
Kershaw, a longtime ace for the Dodgers, has been vocal about his Christian beliefs. In 2023, he publicly criticized the organization’s decision to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence during that year’s Pride Night. The group, known for its provocative performances that includes “queer nuns,” has been a source of controversy for its mockery of Christian beliefs.
“I don’t agree with making fun of other people’s religions,” Kershaw said at the time. “It has nothing to do with anything other than that. I just don’t think that, no matter what religion you are, you should make fun of somebody else’s religion. So, that’s something that I definitely don’t agree with.”
Following the backlash and Kershaw’s comments in 2023, the Dodgers announced they would be reinstating a Christian Faith and Family Day as part of the team’s calendar.
