Did you hear about the Mountain Lion that was causing chaos in a Colorado community?
His days of terrorizing the neighborhood are over. Former NFL Broncos Defensive Lineman, Derek Wolfe, made headlines after he successfully hunted and killed a mountain lion in the state. The event, which took place in a designated hunting area, sparked a mixed reaction among the public with some supporting the act and others condemning it.
Wolfe, who is an experienced hunter, reportedly used a bow and arrow to take down the mountain lion, which weighed approximately 150 pounds. He stated that he hunted the animal as part of a state-sanctioned mountain lion hunting program and that the meat will be used for food.
(Fun Fact: I hunted a mountain lion years ago and we ate it that evening… very much to my surprise it was white meat and was surprisingly really good!)
The hunting of mountain lions in Colorado is regulated by the state’s Division of Wildlife and is allowed in specific areas during designated hunting seasons. The program aims to manage the mountain lion population and maintain a healthy balance of wildlife in the state.
Of course, this story has attracted criticism from animal rights activists who argue that hunting mountain lions is cruel and unnecessary! Many out their argue that hunting should be banned, as it can lead to the extinction of certain species and harm ecosystems.
On the other hand, hunting advocates argue that hunting is an important tool for wildlife management and that it provides an economic incentive for people to conserve wildlife and their habitats. A properly managed wildlife conservation model has statistics that prove the method works to protect wildlife. They also argue that hunting is a long-standing tradition that is part of American culture.
Wolfe was seen on Tucker Carlson Tonight explaining how the event played out. “I got a call from a good friend of mine… and he called me and said, ‘Hey, there’s a cat up here. You want to come help?’ And I said, Yeah, let’s go,” Wolfe explained.
“So we get up there and the first thing we see is a full-grown mule deer that he had drug across the road, right across the street from somebody’s house. And then we followed those tracks up to his porch. It was up on this woman’s porch, living underneath of her porch, even. And when we had talked to the landowner, they said, ‘Hey, we have house cats. And the cats are acting weird.’”
He continued on to explain how tough the hunt was stating “it beat me up bad. I’m all cut up and scraped up.”
The mountain lion season in Colorado continues until the end of March. Last season over 2,000 hunters participated.
