Over the weekend, a TikTok of a woman detailing what a “Saturday morning looks like when you’re single at 29” went viral and sparked a huge cultural debate on X (formerly Twitter) after commentators highlighted the negative connotations consistently tied to having children, promoted by modern-day single women.

The TikTok starts out with a woman who shares that her Saturday consists of staying in bed until almost 11 a.m. after a long night out at a Beyonce concert. While many came to her defense sharing that she was simply enjoying the current state of her life, many pointed out how she tied her “singleness” to being able to do whatever she wants, but also states that this is only possible because she doesn’t “have a kid running around the house.”

“Here’s what your Saturday morning looks like when you’re single at 29 and you don’t have a kid running around the house,” she said. “Every time I thought, ‘I should probably get up and do something’ I thought, ‘Why? Nobody’s making me, and I’m not missing out on anything.”

Throughout the video, she further explains how the night before she “danced and drank her little heart out” and how she didn’t have to “pay a babysitter” to watch her kids. She then went on for a third time about how she is going to spend her Saturday doing exactly what she wants because she doesn’t have kids or a husband.

“I woke up a tad hungover this morning, which is probably why I was in bed for so long. And I was just scrolling on my phone and I saw a picture of shakshuka and I thought, you know what sounds really good, maybe I’m gonna learn how to make shakshuka today, cause I have no plans, and I don’t have kids, and I don’t have a husband,” she added.

At the end of the video, she shares that she’s highlighting this as a reminder to herself, stating that, “Whenever I’m hard on myself about why I’m not married and I don’t have kids and I should be further along at 29 – I wouldn’t want to do anything else this Saturday”.

The video caught the attention of Daily Wire host, Matt Walsh, who responded to the video by posting, “Her life doesn’t revolve around her family and kids so instead it revolves around TV shows and pop stars. Worst of all she’s too stupid to realize how depressing this is.”

This post sparked a heated conversation around the negative connotations often tied to children by single women, but also how difficult modern-day dating culture has become for women, creating an entire generation of both single men and women.

“Fellow conservatives, can we leave her alone?” female commentator, Kaeley Triller, responded, “She doesn’t owe us motherhood or wife status, and mocking her for finding contentment is gross. This is not an attack on the family unit. Let her be,” she posted in defense of the woman.

Due to the virality of the debate, the woman in the video who identified herself as “Julie” responded to Walsh’s initial comments stating that his follower bullied her in comments, and threatened her. “I’m creating content for people who are taking their time creating the lives they want for themselves” she stated. She goes on to state that her content is a way to push back on the life that “society deems correct.”

While many came to her defense, conservative commentators, like BlazeTV host, Allie Beth Stuckey, highlighted the underlying messaging of her original video.

“The way she’s talking about the responsibilities of motherhood and marriage is clearly negative and condescending,” Stuckey posted. “If she were truly just expressing gratitude for the stage of life she’s in, she could’ve done that without contrasting it with how inconvenient it would be to have kids and a husband.”

Walsh’s initial post of the video garnered almost 32 million impressions as the conversation surrounding dating culture and modern-day women continues to heat up. Many highlight both the issues with modern-day dating, coupled with the glamorization of a childless life which ultimately leads to an unhappier generation.
